Leavenworth is a great place if you like theater, especially in the summer.

Throughout July and August Leavenworth Summer Theater turns the Ski Hill, the Fish Hatchery and the Festhalle into centers for theater in Leavenworth. Ski hill? Fish hatchery? That’s right! Every summer you can see The Sound of Music at the Ski Hill Amphitheater.

Think about it… for outdoor theater what could be a more perfect place to see The Sound of Music than with Maria dancing through the mountain meadows, set in the mountains of Little Bavaria? Check the website for details on getting to the Amphitheater. It’s no accident that we named the Summer Theater Leavenworthy after seeing The Sound of Music for ourselves. For a blog post about our visit to the 2011 production see The Hills Are Alive! 2013 marks the 20th season for Leavenworth Summer Theater and the 19th for their outdoor presentation of Sound of Music. It opens July 5 and continues through September 1.

In addition to Sound of Music, the 2018 Leavenworth Summer Theater season will include two more musicals: My Fair Lady and Little Women. The evenings are cool in the mountains so dress in light layers.

In December the Leavenworth Summer Theater may again stage a Christmas classic: It’s a Wonderful Life at the FestHalle Theater in downtown Leavenworth. This favorite fable about a small-town everyman who learns what makes him a hero to his family and friends is a great way to celebrate your family and friends during the Christmas season.

Icicle Creek Theater Festival presentations are August 18 in 2013. The festival offers playwrights the space, time and support they need to develop new plays, as they work alongside professional actors and seasoned directors, and present their work to live audiences. Just a couple weeks earlier, July 28-August 3, they offer the Young Artist Theater Camp, a weeklong workshop that gives students age 13-19 a chance to work with some of Seattle’s leading dramatic actors, writers and producers. They use the opportunity to teach, guide and instruct young actors, culminating in a showcase by week’s end.

In the last full week of June each year, Upper Valley Connections presents the Icicle Creek Players, a theater camp that brings together people with and without disabilities to experience the joy of putting on a play for their community. The 2013 production is Peter Pan. Camp begins on Sunday and there will be two performances, one on Friday, the next on Saturday. See their website for camp and performance information.
